Blind & Vision Rehabilitation Services of Pittsburgh

The Insights Mentoring Program

BVRS’ Employment Opportunities Project has launched the Insights Mentoring Program to match young people ages 14-21 who are blind or vision impaired with a successful and confident adult who also experiences limited vision.

Since visual impairment can be an isolating and low-incidence disability, the program’s goal is to offer young people a friend and advisor who has faced and overcome similar challenges.

Some of the areas where mentors may provide guidance include: dealing with attitudes about blindness, becoming an active member of the community, identifying resources for assistance, offering tips and techniques for living independently, and enhancing job exploration through valuable insight.

Successful, confident adults who are blind or vision impaired are needed as volunteer mentors for this exciting program. Applicants go through an interview process, a background check, and attend a mentor training session. At the time of the match, the mentor and the young person he or she is matched with attend a program orientation.

Your Commitment:

·        agree to a one-year minimum mentoring relationship

·        attend all relationship building activities offered by BVRS

·        meet with the young person you are matched with at least once a month

·        stay in contact with the young person you are matched with at least once a week by phone or e-mail

·        provide BVRS with monthly feedback on your relationship

Your Role:

·        provide advice or guidance on a variety of topics

·        share learning and skill building experiences

·        suggest other resources or services

·        help the young person develop positive self-image and realistic goals
